Audi Cars in India history

Audi Company was founded in Germany by August Horch in 1910. Due to the 1st world war defeat of Germany, Audi had a tough time for survival and Audi had to form a union with three other auto companies DKW, HORCH and WANDERER in 1931. The union of these four companies is what makes the Audi of today. The 4 rings in the emblem of Audi represents the union of the 4 Companies DKW, HORCH, WANDERER and Audi. BMW Cars in India history

BMW is the abbreviation for "Bayerische Motoren Werke" which in English translates to "Bavarian Motor Works". BMW was officially founded on March 3, 1916 and started as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. In 1919 Germany lost World War 1 and Germany was barred from producing Aircraft engines. BMW Germany set up 'BMW India Pvt Ltd' a 100% BMW owned Company in India in 2006. BMW India Pvt Ltd has its headquarters in Gurgaon, Haryana and has a factory in Chennai which officialy started production in India on 29th March 2007. BMW initially started production and assembly in India by importing from Germany completely knocked down (CKD) BMW cars. The first BMW cars to be produced in India was the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series. BMW are adding more models to its made in India models with major parts imported from Germany and slowly increasing the Indian produced content of their cars made locally according to BMW standards. Chevrolet Cars in India history

Chevrolet was founded in the USA in 1911 to produce cars by Louis Chevrolet (a Swiss race car driver who immigrated to America) and William C. Durant, the founder of the General Motors (GM). Chevrolet is actually the oldest foreign car company to set up production facilities in India. Chevrolet had a assembly line way back in 1928 in Bombay. In the early 1950s when the Indian Government asked all the foreign car companies to quit India, Chevrolet ceased it operations in India. When the Indian Government liberalised the car industry in India in 1993, General Motors (GM) the parent company of Chevrolet made a 50-50 joint venture with Hindustan motors. Later GM went on their own and set up their 100% Indian Company "Chevrolet Sales India Private Limited" with its head office in Gurgaon near Delhi. Fiat Cars in India history

FIAT was founded in Italy by Mr. Palazzo Bricherasio on 11 July 1899. In 1902 Mr. Giovanni Agnelli became the Managing Director of FIAT. The first FIAT factory was established in 1900 and employed 150 workers and produced 24 cars in the first year. Those first cars had no reverse gear, to go backwards meant pushing the car. In 1908 Fiat opened a branch in USA called Fiat Automobile Co.

Fiat first arrived in India as the 'Fiat 1100 Delight', a car produced in India by Premier Automobiles Ltd. under license from Fiat. Later the name of the car was changed to Premier Padmini. The Premier Padmini car was in production in India from 1964 to 2000. In those early days there were only 3 models of cars available in India: Premier Padmini, Hindustan Ambassador and Standard Herald.

Fiat now has a joint venture with the Tata group with Fiat managing the joint venture Company called Fiat India Automobiles Limited (FIAL). Fiat India was officially formed on 2 January 1997 and later a modifed Joint Venture agreement between Fiat S.p.A (Italy) and Tata was signed on 19 October 2007. FIAT has its factory in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, and as of today can produce 135,000 cars and 200,000 engines. Fiat has plans to double the production capacity in the near future. This Car factory makes both Fiat and Tata cars and some of the models from this factory are the Fiat Avventura, Fiat Punto EVO, Fiat Linea Face lift and Tata Zest. Ford Cars in India history

The Ford Motor Company was formed in the USA in the year 1903 and the Company's first car was called the Ford Model 'A'. Ford Motors was the first to introduce the concept of an assembly line for manufacturing cars in 1913. This innovation helped Ford Motors to reduce the labour and other costs per car and helped Ford to sell even more cars and become one of the leading Car Company in the world. Ford India Private Limited has been in India for a long time from 1926, but had to stop operations in 1954 due to the Indian Government policies. When the Indian Government liberalised the Car market in India, Ford came back to India in October 1995. They first had a joint venture with Mahindra called Mahindra Ford India Limited. Now Ford India Pvt. Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company in India with its headquarters in Chengalpattu near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Ford India has its main production facilities in Maraimalai Nagar about 50 km from Chennai. The Maraimalai Ford Factory can produce unto 200,000 cars. Ford India is now the sixth largest car manufacturer in India after Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra and Chevrolet. Recently Ford inaugurated its new engine and car manufacturing factory in Sanand, Gujarat. Ford Motor's Chief Executive, Mark Fields was there at the inauguration ceremony and said that Ford's vision is to make India its export hub for small cars and small engines. They are targeting to triple exports from India over the next five years. Ford India now exports 77,000 vehicles a year.

Honda Cars in India history

Honda is now the world's eighth largest car maker in the world after Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan and Peugeot Citroën. Honda has subsidiary in India established in 1995 known as Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) and makes good cars in India which is considered as well made reliable cars in India. Honda has two factories in India, one in Greater Noida since 1997 with an annual production capacity of 120,000 cars and the second factory in Tapukara Rajasthan since September 2008 with annual production capacity of 120,000 units. Hyundai Cars in India history

Hyundai Motor India Limited, formed on 6 May 1996, is a 100% owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of Korea. Hyundai India has the credit of being the largest exporter of passenger cars from India for the last 10 years running. Hyundai has their factory making cars in Sriperumbudur near Chennai and a modern multi-million dollar automobile engineering R&D facility in Hyderabad. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) started operations in India in 1947 making Jeep utility vehicles in India under license from Willys Jeep Company of USA. Maruti Suzuki Cars in India history

Maruti became Maruti Suzuki when Suzuki car company of Japan took majority share in the Company. Prior to that Maruti was known as Maruti Udyog, with the Government of India holding 74% of the shares and Suzuki 26%. Sanjay Gandhi, the younger son of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, started the Maruti Company in June 1971. When Sanjay died in a plane accident on 23 June 1980, Indira Gandhi encouraged the formation of a new Company called Maruti Udyog Ltd and entered into an agreement with Suzuki of Japan to jointly produce cheap small cars in India. The first car produced by Maruti was the Maruti 800 and it was an instant runaway success in India. Maruti Suzuki has two manufacturing facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar in India with a total production capacity of 14,50,000 cars in a year. Mercedes Benz Cars and SUVs in India history

Mercedes-Benz has been operating in India for over 60 years. They started in India in 1954 in partnership with the Tatas for making commercial vehicles under the trade name Tata-Benz. In 1994 Mercedes Benz signed an agreement with the Tatas to produce luxury cars in India and in next year 1995, the first Mercedes Benz car made in India, the Mercedes Benz model E220 were sold in India.

These first Indian made Mercedes Benz cars were assembled from completely knocked down (CKD) kits imported from Germany. In the year 2000 Mercedes bought out the shares of Tatas in their joint venture, and Mercedes Benz's operations in India became 100% Owned by Mercedes under their Indian Company Mercedes-Benz India Pvt.Ltd. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV in India history

Mitsubishi Motor started in Japan in 1917 and was Japan's leading car company till the end of the second world war. After the second world war Japan's biggest industrial groups like Mitsubishi was split up. Mitsubishi Motors emerged from this split up process. By the end of the 1970s, Mitsubishi vehicles were picking up Global awards in many countries like South Africa's 1977 "Car of the Year" (Galant), the 1979 "USA Pick-up of the Year" (L200). In 1982 Mitsubishi launched the Pajero a 4x4 which immediately grabbed world headlines by winning the Paris-Dakar rally. In European countries the 'Pajero' is known as 'Shogun', because the word Pajero sounded offensive in some European languages. The Shogun (Pajero) won the "4x4 of the Year" awards in Britain, France, Australia, Spain and West Germany. Nissan India history

Nissan is a famous Japanese car company founded in 1911 by Masujiro Hashimoto as the 'Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works' and their first car was named 'DAT'. This company name evolved after many mergers and acquisitions to become 'Nissan' in the 1930's. Nissan Motor of Japan was not doing well in the 1990s and so Nissan entered into a partnership with Renault of France under the name 'Renault–Nissan Alliance'. Mr. Carlos Ghosn is CEO of both Nissan and Renault and has been credited with making the two companies very successful. Tata Cars in India history
